People showed up to demonstrate against the closing of the Palisades Media Arts Academy (PMAA) by the San Romanoway Revitalization Association (SRRA).
The highly successful youth orientated media studio has contributed to the arts in a major way in the Jane and Finch area of the city.
The PMAA program was funded by the Trillium Foundation in 2011 to the tune of $344,500 for three years and has one year more on that grant to go.
As bad as the closing was on the youth, the way it was closed was worse. The SRA posted a short notice on the door which youth saw for the first time as workers changed the locks. To date there has been no explanation why the program has closed, what happened to the last year’s money and what will happen to the professional equipment that was to be used by the community.
The youth also called on the Board of the SRA to have a youth representative on it so that this kind of colonial action never happens again.
