COVID-19 & the Community
What’s happening? The Jane Finch community and Northwest Toronto are amongst the areas hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. The 35 Jane bus, which runs through the area, is one of the TTC’s most crowded routes and makes it near impossible for riders (including essential workers) to socially distance. Despite this, the city has refused to Fast-Track the long-anticipated 35 Jane Bus-Only lane. Moreover, the high rates of COVID-19 in the Jane Finch area accompanied by Ford’s government’s unsafe plan for the return-to-school pose a great threat to the health of children and families within the neighbourhood. Jane Finch residents have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19. The government’s unsafe back-to-school plan and the city’s refusal to Fast Track a Jane Bus-Only lane will only worsen these figures
What do we demand? #FastTrack TTC Jane Bus-Only Lane! The 35 Jane bus is one of the TTC’s most crowded routes and moves essential workers to jobs like factories, bakeries, social services, grocery stores, and health care. #FastTrackMore for Essential Workers! Essential workers (especially grocery, food service, manufacturing, PSWs) have been treated as disposable. Companies must protect all workers and pay a living wage, paid sick leave and safe workplaces. #SafeSeptember for Education! Northwest Tornto has been hardest hit by COVID-19 - Rich families have avoided COVID while our families get sick. JFAAP supports the #SafeSeptember demands for #SafeSchoolsFully-funded 5-day in-class learning with less than 15 student cohorts; funded, safe, before- and after-school childcare centre reopenings; Safe Buildings including upgraded ventiliation sytems; Worker Protections; and more. The province and the city must do more to protect hard-hit areas, like the Jane Finch neighbourhood. Our demands keep the safety of our systematically disadvantaged community in mind.
